Spring Newsletter

Happy New Year to all our supporters. These past few months have been incredible and the
rush to reach that £1million target got everyone so excited. We were not sure when we would
reach this milestone but we were able to announce it at our Quiz Night. THANK YOU so
much. You have all been amazing and generous. Many of you have been helping since we
started our branch in 1988 and we are so grateful for your continuous support through the
years. All this could never have been done without all the committee members, past and
present. What an achievement for such a small Midlands town.

Of course, it is not over, as unfortunately, we do not have a 100% cure rate and the fight will
go on.

We were pleased to be able to start a new walk in 2017, from Cobb House Fisheries,
Worcester. This walk together with our Forget me Not Walk in June raised over £13,000. We
are now getting ready to revamp the FGMNW and will soon reveal details of a new venue.
Our Fun Run in May raised a record £27,548.39.

The venue is the Avoncroft Arts Society. The cost is £30 per team of 4 which includes a fish
and chip supper. There is no bar so bring your own drinks, nibbles, s&p etc. We only have
place for a few more teams. Contact Nicole on 01527 878493 or nicnoelharris@aol.com

FUN RUN – MAY13th:
As usual this will take place from Bromsgrove Rugby Club and will consist of 5k and 10k
races. All runners will receive a medal and fundraisers will get a commemorative t- shirt. The
5k which can be walked, follows the canal towpath for some of the route so children must be
accompanied by an adult. The 10k is more challenging and attracts runners from a wide area.
The race will be using chip timing, which was very successful last year. We would like to
stress that we can only accept 500 runners so do not wait to register. You can do this online
at https://bloodwise.org.uk/event-challenges/run/bromsgrove-fun-run
Sixty runners have already entered and there will be no entries on the day.
If you can help with marshalling or car parking please comtact Nicole.

Date and details to be confirmed.

We will be repeating this walk which is around Martley near Worcester. The date and details
will be confirmed later.

Each year we raise a considerable amount from these so if you can help please contact
Adrienne on 01527 875080. We would like to thank the companies and schools which
support us in this way.

If you are having a clear our after Christmas and find suitable items please contact Francoise
on 01527 876234 or Nicole as above.

BLoodwise has a large programme of research based in Birmingham, Leicester and

Our Trials Acceleration Programme (TAP) hub is based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in
Birmingham. We also have TAP centres at the Leicester. Royal Infirmary and Nottingham
City Hospital and an affiliate centre at the University Hospitals of North Midlands in Stoke.
A number of TAP trials at the QE are looking for new ways to treat people with AML and
myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), with a focus on finding treatments that are suitable for
people that are unable to tolerate current treatments and for those who have relapsed.
University of Birmingham

Our research in Birmingham is tailoring therapies for hard to treat chronic lymphoblastic
leukaemia (CLL) and finding new treatments for non- Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), acute
myeloid leukaemia (AML) and myeloma. We are also conducting research and clinical trials
that are looking for ways to improve the success of stem cell transplants including preventing
complications such as Graft versus Host Disease (GvHD). We also have a trial which is
refining treatment for children who have acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) or a type of
NHL called lymphoblastic lymphoma (LBL) , so that there are fewer side effects.
