Spring Newsletter

Happy New Year to all our supporters. These past few months have been incredible and the
rush to reach that £1million target got everyone so excited. We were not sure when we would
reach this milestone but we were able to announce it at our Quiz Night. THANK YOU so
much. You have all been amazing and generous. Many of you have been helping since we
started our branch in 1988 and we are so grateful for your continuous support through the
years. All this could never have been done without all the committee members, past and
present. What an achievement for such a small Midlands town.

Of course, it is not over, as unfortunately, we do not have a 100% cure rate and the fight will
go on.

We were pleased to be able to start a new walk in 2017, from Cobb House Fisheries,
Worcester. This walk together with our Forget me Not Walk in June raised over £13,000. We
are now getting ready to revamp the FGMNW and will soon reveal details of a new venue.
Our Fun Run in May raised a record £27,548.39.

FORTHCOMING EVENTS

place for a few more teams. Contact Nicole on 01527 878493 or nicnoelharris@aol.com

As usual this will take place from Bromsgrove Rugby Club and will consist of 5k and 10k

accompanied by an adult. The 10k is more challenging and attracts runners from a wide area.
The race will be using chip timing, which was very successful last year. We would like to
stress that we can only accept 500 runners so do not wait to register. You can do this online

RESEARCH IN BIRMINGHAM

BLoodwise has a large programme of research based in Birmingham, Leicester and
Nottingham.

Our Trials Acceleration Programme (TAP) hub is based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in
Birmingham. We also have TAP centres at the Leicester. Royal Infirmary and Nottingham
City Hospital and an affiliate centre at the University Hospitals of North Midlands in Stoke.
A number of TAP trials at the QE are looking for new ways to treat people with AML and
myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), with a focus on finding treatments that are suitable for
people that are unable to tolerate current treatments and for those who have relapsed.
University of Birmingham

Our research in Birmingham is tailoring therapies for hard to treat chronic lymphoblastic
leukaemia (CLL) and finding new treatments for non- Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), acute
myeloid leukaemia (AML) and myeloma. We are also conducting research and clinical trials
that are looking for ways to improve the success of stem cell transplants including preventing
complications such as Graft versus Host Disease (GvHD). We also have a trial which is
refining treatment for children who have acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) or a type of
NHL called lymphoblastic lymphoma (LBL) , so that there are fewer side effects.

We would like to thank all participants and volunteers for helping to raise a total of £5500, this takes our branch total up to a whopping £982,000!

A special mention should go out to Myles Broadhurst and his family who completed the 5 mile walk just days after receiving a blood transfusion.  Myles was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia three years ago and is now in remission.  To date Myles and his family have raised over £2,345 for Bloodwise and we would like to extend our gratitude for their hard work.

Cob House Country Walk

Starting and finishing at Cob House Country Park nestled in the heart of Worcestershire, join Bloodwise on Saturday 2nd September for two stunning walks through beautiful parkland, forests, orchards and along river banks. There will also be a 1 mile family ramble, which participants can sign up to on the day.

Choose your distance and register for either a 4.5 mile or 10.5 mile walk:

Circular Ramble
The 10.5 mile circular walk is a stunning route taking in the Cob House grounds, across to Martley, continuing on to the Martley Circular Walk – including the beautiful and extensive views from the top of Rodge Hill – before heading back to Martley Village and returning to Cob House. This walk includes some steep uphill and downhill gradients in parts, but the scenery is spectacular.

Out & Back Ramble
The 4.5 mile out and back ramble takes in a loop of the Cob House grounds, before heading out across beautiful farmland to St Peter’s Church in Martley. Here you can have a welcome break before heading back to Cob House. This route is lightly undulating in parts.

Short & Sweet Family Ramble
A 1 mile family ramble will also be available. The family ramble is an easy walk through the Cob House Country Park grounds taking in a loop of the llama pen and the surrounding fields. Perfect for little legs! We simply ask for a donation of £20 per family of four to be made on the day and little ones will receive a certificate on completion of the walk.

What’s included:
All participants of the 4.5 and 10.5 mile walks will receive a Full English Breakfast meal voucher with tea or coffee to be enjoyed at the Mayfly Café before the walk. Adults will also receive a Bloodwise t-shirt to wear when walking and children will receive certificates on completion of the walk.
